Most new dog owners, before even bringing their pup home, usually buy a dog bed—sometimes they’ve even planned out exactly how to set it up. But as the saying goes, “Expectations meet reality.” Once you bring your dog home, you quickly realize that your furry friend doesn’t actually like sleeping in the carefully prepared bed you bought for them. In fact, some dogs even resist going into their own bed! Instead, it’s these unexpected spots that end up becoming their favorite places to snooze.

  • Cozy little corners at home

Most puppies are hesitant to use their dog beds when they first come home. If it’s a crate, that’s even worse—it feels like a cage to them, and they’d rather run away than go inside. Instead, they love hiding away in small corners of the house. This is because they feel insecure and even scared in the unfamiliar environment. Corners make them feel protected and help reduce anxiety. If your dog prefers sleeping in corners, be sure to give it extra love and make it feel safe!

  • The sofa

Sofas are soft and comfortable, and they carry their owner’s scent. When the dog is home alone, the sofa becomes the ultimate napping spot—not only is it cozy, but the dog can also keep an eye on any movement by the door. And when you come back, your pup can jump off and greet you with excitement.

  • The balcony (or windowsill)

In winter, balconies that get sunlight are a favorite sunbathing spot for dogs. They soak up the warmth and then continue to watch the outside world, satisfying their curiosity. The natural light and scenery also help them relax and rest better. My dog Sunny loves basking in the sun on the balcony during winter—when the sun moves away, he just heads back to the living room to nap.

  • The floor

As the weather warms up, floors become the preferred sleeping place. Wherever it’s coolest, that’s where the dog will lie down. The floor is convenient, so dogs can flop down wherever they want and totally forget about their dog bed. A dog that can nap anywhere shows trust both in the environment and their owner.

  • By the owner’s worn shoes at the door

Dogs have a special attachment to their owner’s shoes—especially the ones with strong smells. When their owner goes out and the dog misses them, it curls up by the shoe rack near the door. Surrounded by the familiar scent, it drifts into a deep, peaceful sleep, feeling like its owner is right there, safe and sound.

  • Right beside their owner

This one’s obvious—if the owner lets the dog sleep nearby, that’s the dog’s absolute favorite spot. Dogs depend heavily on their owners and want to feel their warmth and companionship even while sleeping. With their owner by their side, no matter where they sleep, they sleep soundly and happily!
