Most first-time dog owners, before even bringing a dog home, usually buy a dog bed. Some even plan out exactly how to arrange it. But as the saying goes, reality rarely matches our expectations. Once you bring your dog home, you quickly realize that your furry friend doesn’t really like sleeping in the bed you carefully prepared for them—in fact, some dogs even resist going into it! Surprisingly, the spots they actually prefer are completely different.
-
Cozy Corners at Home
Generally, puppies that are just brought home tend to resist their dog beds, and if it’s a crate, forget it—it’s like being locked in a cage. They wouldn’t even think about going in. Instead, they prefer to hide in small corners around the house. This is because dogs often feel insecure or even scared in a new environment. Corners make them feel protected and reduce anxiety. If your dog loves sleeping in corners, make sure to give them extra care and help them feel safe!
-
The Sofa
Sofas are soft, comfortable, and carry the scent of their human. If the dog is home alone, the sofa is undoubtedly the best sleeping spot. Not only is it cozy, but it also gives the dog a perfect vantage point to keep track of any activity outside the door. And if their human comes back, the dog can leap off the sofa to greet them immediately.
-
Balcony (or Windowsill)
In winter, balconies that get sunlight are perfect for sunbathing, and dogs absolutely love lying there to soak up the sun. After their sunbath, they can continue observing the outside world, satisfying their natural curiosity. The sunlight and the view also help dogs relax and rest better. My dog Sunny often runs to the balcony in winter to bask in the sun, and if the sun moves away, he’ll head back to the living room for a nap.
-
The Floor
As the weather gets warmer, the cool floor gradually becomes a favorite sleeping spot. Dogs will lie wherever it feels comfortable and cool! Floors are also convenient—dogs can sleep wherever they walk. If a dog sleeps everywhere and anywhere, it shows they fully trust the environment and their human.
-
By the Door, Next to Shoes
Dogs have a special attachment to their human’s shoes, especially those that carry a strong scent. When their human is out, and the dog misses them, it often curls up next to the shoe rack. Surrounded by the familiar scent, they fall into a deep sleep, feeling as if their human is right there beside them, giving them an immense sense of security.
-
Next to Their Human
This goes without saying—if the human allows it, the dog’s favorite spot is right next to them. Dogs are highly attached to their humans and want to feel their warmth and presence even while sleeping. With their human nearby, no matter where they sleep, they sleep soundly and peacefully!
